The Gifts of the Spirit
Podcast: Spiritual Gifts with Taylor Foster
Episode 8: The Spiritual Gifts
Scripture:
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 - There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
Last Week's Challenge:
You were challenged to ask the Lord to fill you with the Spirit every day, and spend one day earnestly tarrying before the Lord to be filled with the Spirit. What did you notice? What thoughts and feelings did you experience?
Summary:
The miraculous might just be one of the most exciting parts of God's work. If you've seen it or experienced it, then you know the rush of seeing a healing, or a perfect prophetic word is intoxicating. There's something about the Holy Spirit doing supernatural things that lifts everybody up.
Yet, there are divisions in the church around the gifts of the Spirit. Worse, there are people who have been hurt or even abused by these very gifts. Furthermore, what if I just want to know more about the gifts, or finally experience one? What are the gifts even for, and do I have access to them?
Discussion Questions:
- Have you been tempted to put your identity into your gifts and abilities as a Christian before?
- How have you been built up by someone else operating in the spiritual gifts? How have they blessed you?
- What spiritual gift would you like to see demonstrated in your life? Paul said earnestly desire the gifts- which one do you desire the most?
Wesley's Prayer:
"I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you, Praised for you or criticized for you. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and fully surrender all things To your glory and service. And now, O wonderful and holy God, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, You are mine, and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, Let it also be made in heaven. Amen."
Challenge:
This week, do these three things:
1. Read and pray over John Wesley's Covenant Prayer. Meditate o it and ask the Lord to give you a heart of open, availability toward him.
2. Pray that the Holy Spirit would grant you to use the spiritual gifts, and grant you courage to use them.
3. Be on the lookout to practice these gifts (God might give you a prophetic word for someone you know, or have a random stranger who is sick walk up to you who needs healing).
