Podcast: The Gift of Tongues with Pastor Dave Collins

The Gift of Tongues with Dave Collins

Scripture: 1Corinthians 14:18

“I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.”

Last Week's Challenge:

You were challenged to ask Jesus if there was anything in your life you needed to confess, repent of, and if there was anyplace the Lord did not reign. What came to mind? What did you do?

Summary:

Have you noticed how often the gift of tongues shows up in the book of Acts? Based on Acts, coupled with Paul’s instructions in 1 Corinthians, one might find themselvesthinking that this gift of the Holy Spirit is meant to be an active, regular part of believer’s lives. Is it an active part of your life? Should it be?

Is it possible that tongues aren’t for everyone, or is this a gift I should pursue? What does it even mean to speak in tongues, and how do I know if I’m flowing in a spiritual gift, verses just speaking gibberish? If the gifts are for the building up of the church, how does tongues fit into place here?

Discussion questions:

  • What is your background and experience with the gift of tongues? Like Dave mentioned about his wife in the podcast, did you come from a background that didn’t believe in tongues?
  • Can you speak in tongues? If so, what is it like for you- describe what goes on in your mind and your emotions. If you do not  speak in tongues, is it something that intrigues you, or intimidates you, or both?
  • Why do you think tongues makes some people so uncomfortable? Why would Paul say, in 1 Corinthians 14:18, that he,  “thanks God that [he] speaks in tongues more than all of you”?

Challenge:

Engage in a greater practice of speaking in tongues:

If you do not speak in tongues, and have never wanted to, ask the Lord to show you more about why he calls it a gift, and if He would like to give that gift to you.

If you do not speak in tongues, but would like to, ask the Lord this week for the gift of tongues. Even ask a friend, leader, or pastor to pray that you would receive it.

If you do speak in tongues, practice “praying in the Spirit,” every day this week. Pay attention to how this affects your thoughts and emotions and take note.

If you regularly speak in tongues, pray that the Lord would give you the interpretation for tongues, and see if you receive interpretations this week.
