Podcast: Filled with the Spirit with Taylor Foster

Episode 7: Filled with the Spirit

Scripture:

Acts 2:1-4 - When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

Last Week's Challenge:

You asked the Lord as often as you could to show you how to pray in different situations, and paid attention to what you experienced along the way. Did you feel your prayers changing? Do you feel closer to the Lord? Did you find yourself praying more often?

Summary:

What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Jesus cared a lot about his disciples being filled with the spirit. Then, in Acts 2, after the spirit is poured out at Pentecost, Peter preaches and tells everyone that this promise is for them, and their children, and all who are far off from God. Surely, this promise is for us today, too!

What things can get in the way of me being filled with the Spirit? Can I fixate on the wrong things? Do I need to pray hard to be filled? What if I feel like I am disqualified, or not cleaned up enough? Or is being filled with the Spirit really something for everyone?

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you ever struggle to believe you are saved / forgiven? Is there anything that helps assure you of your salvation?
  • Have you ever 'idolized' or 'over emphasized' the event of being filled with the Spirit (as in fixating on the possibility of having a very emotional experience, or falling down, or speaking in tongues)?
  • Have you ever felt disqualified as a Christian, or disqualified to be filled with the Spirit?

How to be Filled with the Holy Spirit

Challenge:

Every morning this week, ask the Lord to fill you with the Holy Spirit again. Pick a day to spend at least 30 minutes (or more if you can swing it) to "tarry," as Taylor mentioned. Seek the Lord to be filled with more of his Spirit, pay attention to any thoughts, feelings, or impressions as you do.
