Fasting Guide

Heb 11:6

(Important: If you have medical conditions, continue taking your medications. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult your doctor before fasting.)

1. The Heart of Fasting

Fasting is not just about food…it is about drawing closer to God. Use this time to disconnect from the many distractions of life and connect with Him through prayer, worship, and the Word.

2. Begin Where You Are

Every person is different…different bodies, different jobs and schedules, different spiritual experiences. Choose a fast that is safe, but still challenges you. Talk with your community and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.

3. Find Your Fast Zone

The goal of your “Fast Zone” is to find the point where you feel spiritually “in tune”…not sluggish or indulgent. It should be light, spiritually focused, clear-minded, and should help you become more aware of God. Each person’s fast zone is different. Some can eat only fruits and vegetables and remain spiritually sharp. Some lose focus if they eat heavier foods, such as beans, peanut butter, etc. Some need to keep a small amount of caffeine, while others can eliminate it completely. Don’t be afraid to make adjustments as needed, during your fast.

4. Spend Time With God

During the fast: Use the meal time you skip to

  1. Pray
  2. Read Scripture
  3. Worship
  4. Journal
  5. Meditate

A fast without God is just a diet!

5. Prepare and End Well

Before the fast: Take a few days to ease into it. Reduce meat, sugar, white grains, dairy, and caffeine. These steps will help you prevent sickness and withdrawal.

After the fast: Break it slowly. Begin again with light foods. Avoid heavy, greasy meals. Add foods back in gradually. Ending well is just as important as the fast itself.

6. Types of Fasts

Choose one that challenges you a bit! The key: simplicity and purity.

A. Specific Food Fast

Cut out one category…sweets, fast food, red meat, or sugar. This fast is great for beginners or those with dietary needs!

B. Daniel Fast (Based on Daniel 1 and 10)

Generally includes: fruits, vegetables, water, and optional “starchy” vegetables and dairy.

C. Juice Fast

Drink fruit/vegetable juices and water. Some people add protein powders occasionally.

D. Water Fast

Only water…no food! Most commonly seen in Scripture. Limit to only 1-2 days at a time.

E. Total Fast

No food or water. Strongly discouraged, and not required under the New Covenant!
