The gift of serving can show up in many ways as people utilize their gifts, personalities, and opportunities for the benefit of others. As someone who has a great passion for serving, I see it not as a burden but as a wholehearted privilege.

Looking back, I have always loved to serve. Matter of fact, I would look for opportunities to do so. My mom modeled it so sincerely that I thought it was just a normal thing to do. Later in life, I began to understand that God gives gifts to everyone, and some do not realize what they have is a gift because it comes so naturally to them. The amazing thing is each person is equipped in a unique way.

Serving has always been ingrained in almost everything I’ve done. From being a hairstylist to a homeschool mom of six to a personal assistant and caretaker for many years, I would humbly serve those who were put in my path and do it with such excitement! If I have an opportunity to serve with food and making memories, my heart is complete.

As a ministry assistant, I now have the opportunity to serve on a regular basis and I am in my element. One particular story that stands out to me was one of the first times I set up for an event for volunteers and happened to walk in the room and overheard an attendee say, “Someone did all this for us?” It was just a simple and joyful thing to do for them, but that comment blessed my socks off.

No recognition is needed; knowing those you have served feel loved, valued, cherished, and important is enough. I thank God for this gift, and the opportunity to serve others in this way is a blessing!

Weekly Reflection Questions

  1. Are you energized by filling common, practical needs or does it feel like an obligation to you?
  2. Pride and burnout were mentioned as “ditches to avoid” in our reading this week. Have you ever been burned out or prideful in the gift of serving or in any gift you have? How did you work through it?
  3. Do people who are hurting naturally come to me for comfort, encouragement, or support? Do I feel recharged and fulfilled when responding to those needs?
  4. Just because you may not have the spiritual gift of mercy, doesn’t mean you are exempt from showing mercy. Is there someone in your life that the Lord is calling you to extend mercy to? If so, how will you respond?
