Two years ago, I was sitting in an office interviewing for a position in Young Adult Ministry. As the role was being explained, many expectations were listed. Then I heard these words: “We want you to lead a Young Adult Men’s Group.”
At that moment, I felt a bit uneasy. I had never done anything like that before, and I had no idea if it was something I would be good at. But over time, it has become one of the best parts of my job.
In the past, I felt a continual pull to care for, guide, protect, and spiritually develop people. This is the heart of the shepherd. But I am learning to step into the role of Shepherd in the Body, and that has been so rewarding.
Every Tuesday, I love getting to connect with the guys in my group and speak life into them. I love the late-night phone calls, the conversations about life’s challenges, and the opportunity to offer encouragement, wisdom, and guidance. What once felt intimidating has become one of the clearest ways God has shown me that shepherding is a gift He has placed in my life.
I’ve discovered that shepherding isn’t about holding a certain title; it’s about having a heart for people and helping them grow closer to Christ. Recently, I stepped into a new role as Associate Young Adult and Digital Media Pastor. But long before I carried the title of pastor, I was a shepherd, and I will continue to be one regardless of my title. This gift has become one of the greatest joys of my ministry.
