As we begin this series, we invite you to discover how the Holy Spirit has uniquely gifted you for participation in the Church. If you belong to Jesus, then you have been called to contribute to the life of His Body through the spiritual gifts entrusted to you. The gifts were never intended to function in isolation but to be discovered within a Spirit-filled community.
We read in Acts 2 that the Holy Spirit was poured out on Christ’s followers so that they could participate in God’s redemptive work. The same Spirit who filled believers at Pentecost continues to empower each of us for ministry today. Spiritual gifts are reminders that the Church exists to carry out Jesus’ mission in the world until His return.
The Spirit’s work in us is both personal and purposeful. Each of us is born with innate abilities, but when we become followers of Jesus, the Holy Spirit graces us with gifts beyond the natural. Sometimes the Spirit renews and redirects our human abilities for His service. Other times He works through us in ways that go far beyond our earthly capacity. In either case, the gifts affirm that we belong to Christ and are equipped for His purposes.
As you begin to recognize your gifts, you may notice they look different from the gifts of others. This diversity is beautiful as our interdependence reveals God’s relational nature. We need one another to wholly reflect the fullness of Christ, and the diversity of our gifts makes oneness in the Holy Spirit visible to the world.
Ultimately, discovering our gifts is not about comparison or finding our talents. It’s about recognizing our blood-bought place in God’s Kingdom. Your gifts are not accessories to your salvation; they are expressions of God’s grace for your participation in His redemptive community. As we faithfully steward our gifts in community, Christ is pleased to make Himself known to us in unexpected ways.
Throughout this series, we will explore spiritual gifts through three categories: Embodied gifts shape how we live together as the Church. Rooted in humility, service, generosity, encouragement, and love, these gifts make the character of Jesus visible through mutual care within the community of believers. Empowered gifts are the demonstration of the power of God and evidence of His Kingdom advancing on earth as it is in Heaven. Through these gifts, the Spirit increases our faith, strengthens the Church, and reminds us that He is the source of power for all work of ministry. Equipping gifts are servants given by Christ to prepare the Church for ministry, unity, spiritual maturity, and participation in the mission of God. These gifts mobilize every believer to participate in the mission of God.
This series is an invitation to uncover the gifts the Holy Spirit has already given us. As we journey together, may we become more like Jesus for the good of others!
