Welcome to the Fire & Formation Guide.

Written by Micah Eldridge

Fire and Formation are two ideas we see in Scripture that are both important parts of becoming more like Jesus for the good of others.

Fire: The Holy Spirit’s Presence.
Formation: The Spiritual Practices.

Fire is often associated with the presence of God in the Old and New Testaments (Ex. 3.2, Is. 10.17, Acts 2.4, Hebrews 12.29). And formation relates to the spiritual practices we see in Scripture that aid us in our journey with Jesus - things like prayer, Scripture reading, and Sabbath. Both are available, as means of grace, for our spiritual growth. But many of us find ourselves only accessing one or the other.

Some of us are all about the Spirit’s presence, but don’t understand Spiritual Practices. You may want the Holy Spirit encounters to change you and encourage you, but you may not understand how to order your life around following Jesus each day.

Others of us love Spiritual Practices, but lose sight of the Spirit’s presence. You may value your daily or weekly spiritual rhythms, but you may find yourself relying more on your Practices to change you than on the Spirit’s power.

But when we create space for both Fire and Formation in our lives, we find that the practices place us in the Presence of God.

We hope this guide and series helps you discover where you currently experience God’s presence, and how your practices are forming you. And we hope you try new practices to cultivate a life of experiencing God’s presence and power in your daily life.
