Sabbath Moments

Written by Josiah Gerdes

What are Sabbath Moments?

This week, we have explored how to practice Sabbath and how to be formed by rest. While the Sabbath is intentionally setting aside a day (or a large section of a day) for rest, we often feel the need to return to rest more often. Throughout the rest of the week, we can set aside just a few moments to practice some of what we enjoy on our Sabbath. When we take time out of our day to delight and rest in Jesus, we are able to better operate out of rest and out of the love of the Father.

Scripture

Before beginning this practice, take a moment to read the scripture below.

Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.  For you, LORD, rescued me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.  I will walk before the  LORD in the land of the living.
Psalm 116:7-9

Tips for practicing Sabbath Moments

You may find rest and enjoyment sitting in the presence of Jesus and giving Him thanks. Try carving out a few moments in your day to sit in Jesus’ presence and delight in Him.
Remember that our rest does not come from practices, but from Jesus. Consider how Jesus brings you rest or has brought you rest in the past.
It is difficult to settle into rest when we have the distraction of our phone or laptop near us. During your intentional time, consider removing  the distraction of your devices.

Questions

Return to these questions after doing the practice. Take your time thoughtfully answering each question. You may want to write down your answers, ponder them quietly, or even talk about them with someone else.

  1. How do you practice Sabbath? Are there any habits that bring you rest that you could implement briefly throughout the week?
  2. How are you able to best delight in God?
