Examen

Written by Josiah Gerdes

What is the Examen?

The Examen is the practice of prayerfully looking back over your day. God is in many of the moments throughout our day, but it can often be difficult to recognize where He is moving without stopping and looking for Him. This practice invites us to slow down for a few minutes and ask God where He is moving. As we grow into people of love, the Examen can help us more easily recognize how God moves in us to be His love to those around us.

Scripture

Before beginning this practice, take a moment to read the scripture below.

Test me, LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.
Psalms 26:2-3

How to practice the Examen

1. Find a quiet place where you can be still for a few moments. Become aware of God’s presence. Thank God for His love for you.

2. Begin to pray that God will help you understand how and where He is moving in your life.

3. Review your day. What specific moments come to mind? What feelings come up when you think about these moments?

4. Reflect on your actions in these moments. Were you becoming more like Jesus?

5. Look toward tomorrow. Think and pray about how you might live more presently with Jesus and look more like Him.

Questions

Return to these questions after implementing the practice. Take your time thoughtfully answering each question. You may want to write down your answers, ponder them quietly, or even talk about them with someone else.

  1. Where did you experience God in this practice?
  2. What felt obtainable and easy to implement into your daily life? Was there anything that was challenging?
  3. Do you see the Examen helping you become a person of love?
