The Exchange

Invitation to Rest

As you settle in to spend time with God today, try to find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted. Silence your phone. Grab your journal and a pen. Sit comfortably with your hands open in a posture that allows you to receive from the Lord.

Take a few slow, deep breaths:

  • Breathe in: God's peace
  • Breathe out: Any distractions

Opening Prayer: "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. Open my eyes to see, my ears to hear, and my heart to receive what You want to say to me today."

Today's Scripture Reading

Read today's passage slowly a few times and listen with your heart.

With this he (Pilate) went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?" They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!"
John 18:38-40 (NIV)

After reading, pause for a moment and then ask: What word or phrase catches my attention?

Meditation

Read the passage again, slowly, focusing on your word or phrase.

Barabbas, a guilty man deserving of execution, walked free because a sinless, innocent man took his place. In John 18, the cross is not an abstract theological concept but a deeply personal exchange between two people: one a criminal and the other God. Here, we see the Father's plan for all humanity in one exchange. Jesus received the judgement that Barabbas deserved so that Barabbas could receive the freedom that Jesus deserved. What a profound picture of God's grace!

Take a moment to reflect on these questions.

  • Where do you see yourself in this story of Jesus and Barabbas before Pilate?
  • Is there anything that you are holding onto that Jesus died for?

Conversation with God (Prayer)

Read through the passage one more time, allowing the Scripture to lead you to respond to God in prayer. Open your heart and be honest with Him about what you are experiencing. Talk to Him about what comes to mind, and how He might be inviting you to respond.

Are you feeling led toward a prayer of praise? Repentance? A plea for help or healing?

Contemplation

Rest in the awareness of God's presence, remaining open to anything else the Holy Spirit might stir in your heart. If your mind wanders, gently redirect your thoughts toward God. Simply be still. Enjoy a moment of fellowship with God that goes deeper than words.

Rest. Breathe. Be.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, help me carry this truth with me today. May I remember that Jesus took my place on the cross so I could be free of sin, shame, and death itself. By believing and following Jesus, I am welcomed into eternal life with Him. Thank you Lord, for the free gift of eternal life that cannot be taken from me. Amen.
