Week 5 — Love and Respect: Identity Lived Out

Day 1

Read Ephesians 5:33

“However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”

Context

Paul closes this section by circling back to Ephesians 5:21. Mutual submission remains the framework, but now it becomes practical and personal. Paul names what was missing in the Ephesian marriages: husbands were not loving their wives, and wives were not respecting their husbands. This showed up especially in how they treated each other.

This is not about hierarchy; it is about identity expressing itself through behavior. Paul settles the theological discussion and lands the plane with two guiding principles that shape everyday life: love and respect.

Listening to the Text

Read Ephesians 5:33 out loud. Let its simplicity sit with you.

Questions for Reflection

  1. How does love shape the way you act toward your spouse?
  2. How does respect show up, or fail to show up, in daily interactions?
  3. In what ways does your behavior reflect your identity in Christ?
