Read Ephesians 5:25–27
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.”
When Paul turns to husbands, he is addressing a real problem. 1 Timothy 2 suggests that anger and lack of self-control were present among the men in Ephesus. This wasn’t merely a leadership issue; it was a discipleship issue. Paul is not trying to give husbands more authority; he is trying to form them into Christlike men marked by humility, restraint, and sacrificial love.
In a culture where male authority was assumed, Paul redirects the entire conversation. He does not correct submission by asserting dominance. He corrects it by pointing to the cross.
Read Ephesians 5:25–27 slowly. Notice how much of this passage focuses on Christ, not husbands.
